THE ROWING SEASON began for the -Avon club' last, week-end with the traditional eights race between the married men and the single men. When the married men’s eight went on the water, the coxswain received a different response on asking the crews- to number off from: the bow.-In the bow seat was the. veteran sculler, Bernie Reid, with the Avon club, president, John Wylie, in two seat and Athol Earl, the Munich Olympic gold medallist, in three seat. Reid started by giving his age and the others followed his lead. “50, .45, 35,” they called. When they actually, raced, the married men went off course and nearly- hit the bank. Without their usual stroke/ David Lindstrom, the crew had its first loss in about seven years. . ",
