Randwick, Manukau Tusk Cup finalists

PA Wellington Avago Randwick (Wellington) and Manukau (Auckland) are the finalists for next Sunday’s 520,000 rugby league Tusk Cup national club championship to be played at Carlaw Park, Auckland.

Yesterday in Wellington, Avago Randwick defeated Pacific (Midlands), 22-9, while in Auckland, Manukau were always too good for Mount Albert, winning 24-10.

Manukau had been unable to teat Mount Albert this

year in the Auckland club competition, so gained sweet consolation. Randwick beat Pacific easily in the finish, with a big final quarter, which saw them score twice and gain a penalty try. Manukau avenged its loss to Mt Albert in the Auckland club final in resounding fashion at Carlaw Park. Mt Albert had no answer to the strong running and fierce tackling of Manukau, for whom the wing, Steve Skelton, was in outstanding

form. Scorers:— In Wellington: Avago Randwick 22 (George Lajpold, Rod Moore, tries; penalty try, Gerard Katene, 4 penalties, George Lajpold, a conversion) Pacific 9 (Willie Ford, Tom Andrew, tries; Graeme Watene, dropped goal). In Auckland: Manukau 24 (Steve Skelton 2, Kennedy Taogaga, Kelly Shelford, tries; Shelford, 4 conversions) Mt Albert 10 (Jeff van Heeswyck, try; Cedric Lovett, 3 conversions).
