American captures third world championship

NZPA-Reuter Seoul Richard McKinney, of the United States, won his third men’s world archery title but failed to break bis own games record in the thirty-third world archery championships at Seoul at the week-end. A Soviet newcomer, Irina Soldatova, pulled off an upset by winning the women’s gold with her compatriot and world rrecord holder, Lyudmila Arzhanikova, finishing second and the defending world champion, Kim Jin-Ho, of South Korea, third. McKinney, aged 31, the world champion in 1977 and 1983, finished the four-day competition with 2601 points, 16 points behind his own games record set at the 1983 championships in Long Beach,

California, and he later complained of bad weather at the week-end. “I did not perform as I wished due to heavy rains and winds. The bad weather condition took away my chance to set a new record,” he said. South Korea’s Koo Ja-Chong finished second with 2592 points, Takayoshi Matsushita, of Japan, third with 2578. The favourite, Darrell Pace, of the United States, the winner of the Olympic gold in last year’s Los v Angeles Games, finished a disappointing eighth place with 2535. Soldatova, aged 20, who had a one-point lead until the last day, took the women’s title with 2595 points against Arzhanikova’s 2589 and Kim’s 2580. ■■' ■:
