The Charteris Bay Yacht Club may get a ?2000 grant from the Lyttelton Harbour Board towards the cost of repainting its rescue boat Te Wnarau. The board’s small craft committee recommended at its meeting this week that the grant be made. The recommendation will go before the finance committee and then the board meeting later this month. Te Wharau was built in the 1950 s and over the last two winters the club had spent $4OOO on refurbishing. Work had included replacing planks and damaged braces and the repainting of both inside and outside of the boat, said the secretary, Mrs Rosemary Allan, in a letter to the council. The boat was used on club days for the rescue of yachts and light craft in distress at the head of the harbour. On days when there was no competitive sailing the boat was crewed by club members from Diamond Harbour, Church Bay, and Charteris Bay. The club’s application was supported by the Harbourmaster, Captain Jack Barbour, who said he was impressed by the high standards achieved by

the club. The club . always made its boats available to the board and on occasions this had meant board vessels did not have to be called out, he said. Two years ago Te Wharau sustained substantial hull damage when helping many small craft in heavy southerly conditions. This had no doubt contributed to the amount of repair work mentioned, said Captain Barbour.
