Lifeboat cup race

Members of the Tug Lyttelton and the Tuhoe preservation societies will continue their friendly rivalry tomorrow in the annual lifeboat race. Teams of four will row a lifeboat from each of the historic vessels across the inner harbour at Lyttelton, starting from Gladstone Pier and finishing at the dry dock. The Tuhoe Preservation Society now held the Jelley Cup, but the crew from the Tug Lyttelton Preservation Society was determined to

win it this year, said the race organiser, Mr John Howie. The cumbersome clinkerbuilt lifeboats usually took a crew of about 12, and so the four crew in each team would have their work cut out to get the boats across the harbour, he said. This is the second time the cup has been contested. It was given by an avid fan of both vessels, Mr Doug Jelley. The race will start at 3 p.m. tomorrow and will be held wet or fine.
