Domestic rugby law endorsed

NZPA staff correspondent Wellington The New Zealand Rugby Union further endorsed its support yesterday for the domestic law variations to continue into next season. The council meeting generally accepted the recommendations of its technical advisory committee to pursue the safety variations for 1986. The N.Z.R.U. sought to brighten up the game by fine tuning the sweeping changes introduced at the start of the year. As from next winter, the team putting the ball into the scrum will dictate the numbers in the scrummage. This will negate the No. 8s releasing from the scrum. A councillor, Mr Bob Stuart, said the rule would reduce the negative, tactics of the No. 8s and would facilitate enterprising rugby from set play. The recommendation received widespread approval from the unions but was not supported by the selectors. Another notable alteration for next year was the slightly increased forward scrum movement, which will be able to move approximately one and a half metres.
