Steve Baker moving north

Steve Baker, the former Christchurch Brother United goal-keeper, will be playing for the Claudelands Rovers soccer club in the northern ■league next winter. Having joined United for

the 1984 season, Baker pulled out of the Rothmans League squad midway through this year’s competition. Claudelands Rovers, which is based in Hamilton and coached by the former Napier City Rovers man, Mr Roger Wilkinson, won promotion to the first division in the northern league this year and is ambitious to advance to the national competition. Baker has agreed to a one-year contract, and will move north at the end of January. “I’m really looking forward to it,” said Baker, who spent several seasons as an apprentice at West Ham United in England. Claudelands are likely to have a former team-mate of Baker’s from his West Ham days in its team next year. Mark Schiave, a midfield player, was in the same youth cup winning West Ham team as Baker. The tall Cockney goal-keeper went to Hamilton recently and admitted to being most impressed with the set-up at Claudelands, and particularly with the training facilities, which was one aspect he was unhappy about this year at United.
