Resort staff seek isplation allowance

PA Wellington Hotel staff working in resorts off the beaten track will pursue their claim for an isolation allowance at award talks next month. The claim for the allowance was one of the issues behind a strike at the Chateau Tongariro Hotel on Mount Ruapehu in mid-Sep-tember. Since then the Hotel and Restaurant Workers’ Union has been pursuing the claim nationally and wants an isolation allowance for workers in seven resort hotels. They are the T.H.C. hotels at Milford Sound, Mount Cook, Franz Josef, the Chateau, Waitomo, Wanaka, and Waitangi. The secretary of the Wellington Hotel and Restaurant Workers’ Union, Mr Peter Cullen, said it was accepted that four of the hotels were more isolated than the others — those at Mount Ruapehu, Mount Cook,

Franz Josef, and Milford Sound. Ways to compensate workers for their isolation could include more pay, extra holidays, or free travel out of the area, he said. Award talks would start on November 11.
