S.M.P. payments

Sir, — Yes it is good that they have removed the S.M.P. payments. With hind-sight we farmers would have been better if we had received no S.M.P. Why I say this is because we would not now be in a situation of being saddled with increased costs, through wage increases granted while the farmer received the S.M.P. A 15 per cent wage reduction would go some way towards enabling the industry to trade at a small profit to all again a profit to the workers, the companies, the farmers and all those others who say their incomes have nothing whatsoever to do with farming. The meat still does have value, we as farmers are having to accept less, why not every one else? — Yours, etc., IVAN CRAW. October 1, 1985.
