Lambs turned into fertiliser
PA Auckland Fifty thousand fat and damaged lamb carcases are being turned into fertiliser at the Westfield freezing works because the Meat Board cannot sell them overseas. “The world trend is for leaner meat and we would rather have that in our freezers,” said Mr Brett Sangster, public relations officer for the Meat Board. There were no market prospects for the meat, he said.
The president of the Auckland Freezing Workers’ Union, Mr Frank Barnard, said bulk rendering of carcases began 18 months ago. Workers were told the meat could not go on the local market because of a danger of flooding it. Seasonal stock shortages had forced the temporary closing of Westfield for three to six weeks. Hundreds of freezing workers and other staff at the Otahuhu plant had been told to take their holidays this week.
