Tomlinson wins chess

Stephen Tomlinson, a fourth form pupil of Mairehau High School, won the Canterbury Chess Club’s schoolpupils’ tournament at the week-end. Tomlinson, who was the No. 3 board player for his team in “The Press” tournament in the second term, gained four wins and a draw over the five rounds.

Second place was shared by two form 111 pupils of Burnside High, Tim Jeffries and Graeme Crombie, both with four points. Another Burnside player, Andrew Jeffries, was fourth with three points and a half.

The top intermediate school players were David Lean (Sumner, form I), with three points, and Jason Hoseason (Cobham, form II), with two points and a half.
