Anti-racism grants

NZPA-Reuter Geneva The World Council of Churches said yesterday that it had granted $U5220,000 ($402,600) this year to three black guerrilla and political movements opposing South Africa’s Government. Half of this total, drawn from the 300-member Geneva-based council’s controversial Special' Fund to Combat Racism, went to the South West Africa People’s Organisation, which is fighting for control of Namibia

(South West Africa). The African National Congress, the main black group fighting the South African Government, received $U577,000 ($140,910). A grant of $U533,000 ($60,390) went to the PanAfrican Congress to help set up a centre in Tanzania aimed at achieving selfreliance in food production and accommodating refugees from South Africa. S.W.A.P.O.’s SUSIIO,OOO ($201,300) was for legal aid, information work, educa-

tion, and helping families of killed or imprisoned Namibians.

The grant to the A.N.C. was for humanitarian work and publicity and information, the council said. A further SUSI7I,OOO ($312,930) of annual grants from the fund were shared among 33 anti-racist groups in West Europe, the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and New Caledonia.

Sums ranged from SUS2SOO ($4575) to SUSBOOO ($14,640).
