Cannabis cake: host in court
Greymouth’ reporter People began hallucinating at a twenty-first birthday party after eating slices of cake in which there was cannabis, Sergeant N. W. Smith told Judge Fraser in the District Court at Greymouth yesterday. Patrick Bernard Purcell, aged 21, a labourer, whose birthday party it was, pleaded guilty to a charge of supplying cannabis to others on June 14.
Sergeant Smith said that the defendant had collected two cakes from the bonnet of a car outside the hotel where the party was being held and had taken them inside. Candles were lit and slices of cake banded round. People began having hallucinations and it was thought that it might have been a case of food poisoning. Two of the guests, including the defendant’s father, were admitted to hospital. Purcell had said he had asked an associate to prepare a cake containing cannabis as a joke, said Sergeant Smith. Purcell was convicted and remanded to October 30 for a report and sentence. Mr M. M. Bell appeared for Purcell on agency instructions from Mr A. D. Ford, of Wellington.
