Meat exports at risk
PA Invercargill The bombing of Iran’s main oil terminal could have “serious implications” for New Zealand meat exports, according to the Meat Board. The Kharg Island oil terminal was earlier this week almost paralysed by Iraqi air raids. Iran exports 90 per cent of its oil through Kharg Island and no tankers have loaded there for five days. The board’s public rela-
tions manager, Mr Barrie Saunders, said yesterday that if Iran could not export its oil, a lamb contract might be jeopardised. New Zealand planned to export 140,000 tonnes, or 30 per cent of its lamb exports, to Iran this year, he said. Mr Saunders said that only this year New Zealand had returned to a direct counter-trade arrangement with Iran, bartering lamb for oil.
