Big savings on shell homes

Prestige and Holland shell homes are designed by Duncan Grey to suit all financial and domestic situations.

Built on site from permanent, not portable, materials, shell homes provide for two-bedroom cottages and, at the more expensive extreme, for fivebedroom en suites.

“We build for the greater Canterbury area and our clients range from young first homers to retirement cottages,” said the sales manager for Duncan Grey Ltd, Mr Ron Williams.

The concept behind shell homes, Mr Williams said, was to take the structural and skilled work out of the building trade so as to allow the home buyer with general handyman skills to complete the house him or herself. “We take the shell home up to the stage where it is a

“lockable unit,” Mr Williams said. “The floor, roof and walls are all completed. “We don’t, however, do the internal lining, fitting, joinery, painting and decorating, or registered trades such as plumbing. These final tasks are left up to the owner.

“A shell home, compared to a client going to builders, would save them $lO,OOO to $15,000,” said Mr Williams.

Clients have the choice of different brick and block work in colour as well as style. \ “We try to work in as much as possible with every client’s personal requirements,” he said. All designs in shell homes are a perfect handyman’s home and have the standard features: • Solid reinforced concrete foundations. • Solid reinforced 100 mm

thick concrete floor slab. © Permanent concrete block exterior. © Fibreglass ceiling insulation. © Exposed beam ceiling throughout. • First stage electrical wiring by registered electrician.

• All internal wall framing completed by builder. ® Ceiling lining installed by builder. • Aluminium windows.

• Built on site not transportable.
