Southland’s worst loss
PA Invercargill Southland suffered its worst recorded loss at Rugby Park, and moved a step closer to relegation from the first division yesterday, when defeated 54-6 by Wellington. Conceding eight tries, and completely unable to foot it with the rampant Wellington pack, Southland . was never in the hunt. L
The Wellington forwards, spearheaded by the All Blacks,) Brian McGrattan, Scott Crichton and Murray Pierce and hooker Dave Mahanga, wound up some great drives and toyed with the lightweight- Southlanders. The Wellington scrum ground Southland into the firm, hard turf of Rugby Park, while the line-outs
were a 21-8 feast for the visitors. Only the persistent whistle of the Canterbury referee, Mr Mike Fitzgibbon, who awarded 23 penalties, 12 of them to Southland, saved Southland from even greater defeat. Wellington’s 54 points surpassed the previous highest score on Rugby Park, the 44 registered by Auckland in 1928.
It was the third time this season the ■ Southlanders have yielded 50 points and it was the most points scored against the side in first division rugby. Scorers: Wellington 54 (M. Clamp 2, B.
