King Delamere wins
The Balmerino entire, King Delamere, came back into Caulfield Cup calculations with a strong win in the weight-for-age $lOO,OOO John F Feehan Stakes (1600 m at Moonee Valley on Saturday. The five-year-old was made one of the favourites for the $502,000 Fosters Caulfield Cup (2400 m to be run on October 19, after his dashing win in the weight-for-age J. J. Liston Stakes (1400 m at Sandown on August 24.
But, after a disappointing fourth to Delightful Belle in the weight-for-age Memsie
Stakes (1400 m at Caulfield a fortnight ago. bookmakers eased his price. However, Saturday’s race readjusted the betting, much to the delight of trainer, Jack McGreal, and jockey, Gary Willetts.
The entire will run in Thursday’s $60,000 weight-for-age Underwood Stakes (2000 m in which he ran second last year, and possibly the $60,000 weight-for-age Caulfield Stakes (2000 m on October 12.
New Zealand gelding, Lacka Reason (15-1), beat only one home, while the Colin Hayes-trained Mrs
Fitzherbert (8-1) weakened to run eleventh after leading.
Foxseal (8-1), ridden bv New Zealander, Peter Johnson. ran on strongly from last at the 800 m to be three lengths away third, just ahead of the West Australian mare, Eastern Temple (14-1), and the well-backed Phoenix Rising (13-4). Of the Melbourne Cup fancies in the race, the George Hanlon-trained pair. Black Knight (50-1) and Our Sophia (8-1 into 7-1). ran seventh and eighth, both making up ground.
