Peace groups tell P.M. to stay firm

PA Wellington Peace activists have sent a message to the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, insisting that no nuclear-capable vessels be allowed into New Zealand ports. After a week-end meeting, a message signed by members of the Peace Group Aotearoa — the national co-ordinating organisation for 300 peace groups in New Zealand — was sent to Mr Lange. The group predicted allout protest if the Government backed down and allowed such vessels to visit. The movement applauded

the Government’s “strong and courageous actions to date implementing your nuclear-free policies.” It said, however, that “the Government is completely unable to judge whether a nuclear-capable warship is or is not carrying nuclear weapons beneath its decks.” “Therefore, if a nuclearcapable warship visit is approved, the responsibility will regrettably be shifted from the Government to the peace movement to oppose the visit and work to protect New Zealand’s nuclearfree status,” the message said.
