Child, 10, is police victim

NZPA-Reuter Johannesburg The South African police shot dead three people, including a 10-year-old child, in clashes with crowds, and lawyers of an anti-apartheid leader, Allan Boesak, said yesterday that they were seeking his release. The three had died in separate clashes when the police fired bird-shot at stone-throwing crowds in three Cape Town townships classified as Coloured, official sources said. An urgent application for the release from detention of Mr Boesak, president of

the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, would be filed this week, his lawyers said. They expected the Supreme Court hearing next week. Mr Boesak was arrested on August 27, the day before he was planning to lead a mass march to the prison where the black nationalist leader, Nelson Mandela, is held, near Cape Town. Mr Boesak was detained under the Internal Security Act, which allows indefinite detention in solitary confinement.
