'I am not happy I have A.I.D.S.’
NZPA-Reuter Los Angeles The film star, Rock Hudson, has sent a message to celebrities organising a giant A.I.D.S. research benefit, saying that he was not
happy he had the disease but felt his misfortune would have some positive worth. Elizabeth Taylor, Burt Reynolds, Shirley MacLaine and other celebrities hope to raise SUSI million at a gala dinner in Los Angeles today. Hudson, aged 59, who is being treated for acquired immune deficiency syndrome at his beach-front home in the film star colony of Malibu, said in his mes-
sage, read by a spokeswoman for today’s event: “I regret the circumstances of which you are all aware that prevent me from being with you.
“People have told me that the disclosure that I have been diagnosed as having A.I.D.S. helped to make the evening an immediate sellout and will raise a million dollars to help in the battle against A.I.D.S. “I am not happy that I am sick. I am not happy I have A.I.D.S. But ... I can at least know my own misfortunate position has some positive worth.”
