Too much Bond — Lawyer

PA Auckland The people responsible for the security of the French agent, Captain Dominique Prieur, have read too many James Bond books, her lawyer, Mr Gerard Curry, said yesterday. He said of the barbed wire put round the perimeter of buildings at the Ardmore detention centre by the Army: “I really think the security is a little bit overdone and unrealistic ... the authorities have been reading too many James Bond books.” Fortification of the South Auckland establishment is expected to be finished by tomorrow. It began on Wednesday before the arrival of Prieur from Christchurch Women’s Prison where she had been held in recent weeks. She is jointly charged with the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior.

About 75 soldiers began securing the barbed wire on Wednesday, and by last evening only about a dozen were still working. Yesterday jumbo, cast iron rubbish bins, each some several metres long, were placed in zig-zag fashion along the driveway leading to the main gate to slow traffic.
