Interest at peak: P.M.

PA Wellington The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, said yesterday that he believed interest rates in the Government’s borrowing programme had peaked “although there might be wobbles around the top.” He said that his earlier predictions of when interest rates would begin to drop would now not be borne out. Last month Mr Lange said that there would be a real concern by the Government if high rates continued

for much longer. He was commenting then on rates of up to 26 per cent for short-term Treasury bills. Mr Lange said then that he held that rates should be dropping by about the end of September. He said yesterday that interest rates were not going to come down when he had thought they would. His comments had been based on assessments which had now been proved wrong.
