Board dominates wool sale

PA Dunedin The Wool Board dominated the Dunedin wool sale yesterday, bidding on 63 per cent of the offering and setting the market levels. The board eventually bought 7422 bales of the 20,500-bale offering. This held the market about firm on recent sales. The official report said that compared with the last fine-wool sale in Christchurch on September 12, Merino fleece was firm, as was Halfbred fleece, necks and bellies. Halfbred pieces were in buyers’ favour. Compared with the crossbred sale at Napier on September 13, crossbred fleece was generally firm. Cross-

bred skirtings improved 2.5 per cent, and oddments gained up to 5 per cent. Crossbred second-shear was in sellers’ favour, and better style crutchings improved up to 5 per cent. Poorer crutchings were in buyers’ favour. The main competition came from the Wool Board, suppott from the Continent, the Far East and New Zealand mills. Much of the wool opened up well, showing good colour and reasonable length. The offering comprised Merino fleece 2.5 per cent, Halfbred fleece 25 per cent, strong fleece 38 per cent, fine oddments 8 per cent, strong oddments 17 per

cent, second-shear 5 per cent, crutchings and locks 4.5 per cent. The market indicator was 479 c a kilogram clean and 357 c greasy. Merino fleece, 20 micron: Good to super to 1041. Good to 1033.
