Hobbs honoured by captaincy
Jock Hobbs, the Canterbury flanker, is looking forward to the prospect of leading the All Black rugby team on its tour of Argentina next month.
The appointment of Hobbs as captain was announced in Wellington last night by the New Zealand Rugby Union secretary, Mr Barry Usmar. As well, Brian McGrattan (Wellington), and Bruce Hemara (Manawatu) were named to replace John Ashworth and Andy Dalton respectively. Hobbs, who also captained the All Blacks on their tour of Fiji in Dalton’s absence last year, said that he regarded the appointment as an honour.
“I’m disappointed at the same time that Andy Dalton
can’t tour for financial reasons, but it is still an honour.”
He said he thought the tour would be a challenge. “Once the national championship is completed, team members will turn to that challenge.” “I think that it is a good side and the two players added are very good. They will want to prove that they should have originally been in the squad,” Hobbs said.
McGrattan, a loosehead prop, was an All Black to England and Scotland in 1983, to Australia last year and to Fiji while Hemara, a New Zealand Maori representative and an All Black trialist for the last two seasons, is a new All Black.
