Leading cyclists in Chch to Akaroa race

“The Press” General Lee Christchurch to Akaroa Return Cycle Race has attracted a large field of top class riders, coming from as far as Nelson to Timaru. The 150 km multi-stage event, to be raced in three grades, is the last major race before the nationals in Nelson, and should prove a good test for the Canterbury team, all members of which are competing.

Pre-race favourite for the A grade section appears to be Brian Fowler, of Woolston General Lee, but he could be extended by the newly returned Healing

Papanui rider, Peter Coates, who has been riding in Europe for the last year and is an unknown force. Greg Hume (Papanui), who rode second to Fowler in two races last week-end, could cause an upset if he gets the right break and support from his club riders. The A grade 150 km event is raced over five stages, with the first 45km stage starting at Halswell and finishing at Little River. Stage two, from Little River to Devauchelles, is a 14km 4ime trial and the third Ukm stage to Akaroa

includes a hill climb. Riders turn at “The Press” signs at Akaroa, and start the fourth section of the 35km return stage, which finishes at Devauchelles. The final 48km stage finishes at Halswell Hall. The B and C grades are raced over the same circuit, and include a 14km time trial from Little River to Devauchelles to end the outward stages. The riders then return via Little River with the final stage of 48km to Halswell. The B grade event should develop into a close race

between Andy Hallaway, the Woolston General Lee senior, and the two first year juniors, Mark Lucas, and Jason Smith of Healing Papanui. Last year C grade section winner Chris Wilson of Hornby will be out to hold his title again, but Brian Daken, of Healing Papanui, who won last week-end’s Ashburton to Christchurch C grade race, should provide him with stiff opposition.

The race starts at 9.30 a.m. from Halswell and finishes at 3.30 p.m. at Halswell Hall. Post entries accepted.
