Lomondy impresses at Awapuni

Special correspondent Palmerston North Lomondy took the eye with another good trial at Awapuni yesterday morning and he looks one of this centre’s best bets when he contests the Elliston Honda Handicap at tomorrow’s Marton meeting there. Few won more impressively than Lomondy on the first day at Hastings. He has 57.5 to carry this weekend but in the hands of David Walsh he looks an outstanding prospect. The trainer, Noel Eales, has accepted with half a dozen horses tomorrow but Lomondy is the only certain starter. The others are in doubt unless there is rain before the week-end. The course proper has firmed up remarkably in the last few weeks and nearly all trialists used the plough yesterday. Working on the plough, Lomondy was going well with Cornwall King at the end of 1200 m in lmin 19.45, the last 600 m in 395. Cornwall King is in the Motorcorp Handicap but is on the doubtful list. He ran well at Hastings last week but needs easy ground. Silver Elm ran her 1200 m in lmin 19s, the last 600 m in 39.45. She worked well. Silver Elm has been on the easy list with a hoof problem but she seems over it. Noel Eales is reluctant to run her on a firm track in the Honda Metric Mile but if she does start Jim Walker will be the rider. Bronze Valley was again impressive, running 1000 m with the Waverley candi-

date, Cuspidor, in lmin ss. the last 600 m in 395. Bronze Valley has done everything right this week and though he prefers easy ground he seems well weighted to threaten in the metric mile.

Few worked better yesterday than Fantastic which ran 1200 m in lmin 17.45, the last 600 m in 38.45. This was a good trial for the Honda Mile and firm track conditions will suit him better than most.

Amethyst enhanced her maiden prospects by matching Flying Tui at the end of 1000 m in lmin 5.45. the last

600 m in 37.45. This was a good effort and Amethyst could shine tomorrow. Flying Tui is well but some rain would help her for the Honda Metric Mile.

Sophie’s Secret and Can Lah ran 1000 m in lmin 5.65, the last 600 m in 39.65. They are rivals in the Honda Accord and both require easy ground to produce their best.

Infantry and Fast Track, two good prospects tomorrow, worked on the course proper, running 1200 m in 1:18.5, the last 600 m in 395.
