AUSTRALIA Easy, but off the lows

PA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed easier but off the day’s lows as initial panic over the Government tax package, due to be revealed last night, subsided in afternoon trading. Details, page 6. They said investor eagerness to boost share prices as high as possible before the Treasury announcement was based on a belief that any capital gains tax in the package will only apply to purchases made from today.
