Dolphins freed

Sir,—“The Press” report on September 17 that trapped dolphins had been set free, was a welcome change from the more frequent reports from around the world where man shows himself too often as a ruthless predator. The concern shown for the dolphins by Nelson residents, children, a helicopter pilot and the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, whose fine team effort, hard work and, for some, hours spent in cold water keeping the dolphins from beaching, suggests that man, when confronted with a crisis, particularly rescue, is prepared to extend a supreme effort to animals. Regrettably his compassion is not so easily aroused if the suffering is distant. Out of sight out of mind can be a very comfortable excuse for doing nothing about animal abuse. The animals of the world are paying too high a price for man’s greed, vanity and arrogance.—Yours, etc.,

EDNA BRUGES. September 18, 1985.
