Battery hen eggs

Sir, — A news item last week reported that consumers were satisfied with the production and sale of eggs supplied by the Poultry Board. I am not. The production of eggs by battery hens in tiny wire cages all their lives distresses me. As I cycled home tonight, a truck with cages of battery hens went past. The hens were squashed in tiny cages, their feathers ugly from poor food and conditions, their combs gross and pink, not red and healthy. No freedom to walk about, no freedom to fly, no freedom to enjoy sunshine and scratching dirt. Hens able to range freely have beautiful plumage and health. I have seen them. I am appalled that consumers are satisfied to buy eggs laid by hens kept in these conditions. I prefer to buy free range eggs and am prepared to go without when such eggs are not available. — Yours, etc.,

KATE GLENDORRAN. September 17, 1985.
