Nuclear ships policy

Sir,—Mr J. Pallot has condemned the peace movement with absurd statements. If he based his apparent confidence in the escalating nuclear brinkmanship on “research” and “facts,” he has missed a few chilling points. The United States nuclear war plan, the so-called 5.1.0. P.-6, contains a firststrike option. A United States Air Force strategist who has worked on the 5.1.0. P. stated recently, “If there is a nuclear war, the United States will be the one to start it.” Can we depend on the military not to use nuclear weapons — to adhere without fail to “deterrence”? General D. L. Evans, head of the entire United States military command and control system, said in June, 1983, “I’m totally convinced that nothing works in the military except the bomb.” The fate of the Earth appears to be in good hands. — Yours, etc., ROBERT L. LEONARD. September 18, 1985.
