Going to a party

A great Kiwi musical clobbering machine descends on Christchurch tomorrow and Timaru on Saturday in the form of the Party Boys, a group of four lads who are not Merseysiders.

However, they seem to be drawn from the some of the mainstreams of New Zealand rock music — Neil Finn (formerly of Split Enz), Dave Dobbyn and Peter Warren (both of DD Smash), and Mike Chunn (formerly with Citizen Band).

Neil Finn said that Dave Dobbyn had suggested just such a tour sometime ago, but it had not suited him at the time.

However, Finn said he

now found that he had some spare time before The Mullanes started recording their album, and that was how the Party Boys were put together.

“I don’t like the name of the band. It has unfortunate connotations of a few years ago, but it was something out of my control.” Basically, Party Boys was meant to be a fun thing, he said.

The Party Boys have all the appearances of a musical interlude between projects for the members of the band. Dobbyn is hard at work on a soundtrack for the animated film, “Footrot Flats,” in Sydney. The Mullanes’ had signed

a deal with Capitol Records in a basic two-album deal, with the usual options for further recording, Finn said.

The group expected to be touring New Zealand in February and March of next year to coincide with the world-wide release of the debut LP.

It should also be pointed out that bass player, Mike also has some association with the other members of The Party Boys, having played in Split Enz at one stage.

The Party Boys play at the Gladstone Tavern tomorrow evening and at the Old Mill, Timaru, on Saturday evening.
