Try a new sport

Are you a rock climber at heart, an armchair abseiler, a wistful windsurfer? Do your children make you envious with their exploits sailing, canoeing, or orienteering? The Christchurch City Council is starting an outdoor recreation experience course designed to give adults the chance to learn these and other adventurous sports. “Several people complained to us that in their youth they had not been ’iven the opportunity to learn the exciting sports many of our young people ?an learn today so we decided it was about time they were given that opportunity,” says city council recreation officer, Anne Hindson.

“You don’t have to be fit or experienced, just willing to learn something new.” Each activity is supervised by experienced tutors.

Activities include rock climbing and abseiling, white water rafting, sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, archery and orienteering. A confidence course is also offered. This covers confidence skills such as assertiveness, awareness building, and how to become more independent. Beginning on September 25, the course will be held each

Tuesday, from 9.30 a.m. tc 1.30 p.m. for eight weeks. Fees for the course range from $1.50 to $4.00, depending on which activities you wish to pursue. “The course is offered for those seventeen years and up, so there’s not really any age limit. It’s beneficial to try something a little bit challenging and exciting, and it may lead to the discovery of a favourite lei-sure-time pursuit,” says Anne Hindson. The organisers hope to limit the number of enrolments to about twenty people so she warns hopefuls for the course to get in quickly. For further information or to enrol ring 791-660, extension 635. Ask for a recreation officer. The closing date for enrolments is Monday, September 24. Should this course prove successful the City Council hope to run week-end courses in a similar vein for adults in full-time employment. (
