Kenyan rebels ‘executed’
NZPA-AFP London Twelve jailed leaders of an abortive military coup in Kenya in August, 1982, were secretly executed more than two months ago in a Nairobi prison, “The Times” newspaper reports today. Quoting diplomatic sources in the Kenyan capital, it said that the two main coup leaders, Corporal Hezekiah Ochuga Rabala and Sergeant Pancras Oteyo, had been hanged in Nairobi’s Kamiti jail on July 9 and the other a few days later. It said the executions
were common knowledge in Nairobi, although the local press was silent and the Government refused to confirm or deny the killings. The 12 soldiers were condemned to death for treason by military courts in 1983 and 1984 and their appeals were rejected by the High Court. About 1000 soldiers, mostly from the Air Force, were jailed for up to 25 years over the failed coup, in which 159 people were killed, according to official figures. The President, Mr Daniel arap Moi, has since pardoned 473 of them.
