Gold for N.Z. bowlers

NZPA-AAP Tweed Heads

New Zealand bowlers looked set to win the over-all medal tally at the Pacific bowls championship after winning gold medals in the men’s and women’s pairs yesterday. The New Zealanders all played final round matches against Papua New Guinea yesterday, with the women’s pair, Rhoda Ryan and Joyce Osborne, winning 25-11 to take the gold from Australia. The men’s pairs combination of Wayne Nairn and Maurice Symes went down, 17-18, but ■ won their section on aggregate, also heading off their Australian opponents. In the men’s triples, Stuart McConnell, Jim Christie, and Terry Scott walloped the Papua New Guineans, 25-8, but earned a silver medal on aggregate behind undefeated Hong Kong. Results in the morning session of the Pacific bowls championships at Tweed Heads, Brisbane, yesterday: Men’s pairs: Australia (Denis Katuna-Rich, Arthur Black) beat United States (Arnold White, Richard Folkins) 29-11, Papua New Guinea (Rolf Meyer, Rudi Wild) beat Fiji (Peter Fong, Peter Thaggard) 23-17, New Zealand (Wayne Nairn, Maurice Symes) beat Hong Kong (Noel Kennedy, Dannv Ho) 37-9.

Men’s triples: United States (Orville Artist, Clive Forrester, Ken Deggenhardt) beat Australia (Wally Bonagura, Don Serman, Keith Poole) 20-13, Fiji (Javomani Naidu, Ram Shankar, Kevin Perry) beat Papua New Guinea (Ron Smith, Phillip Rei, Frank Garbi) 23-18, Hong Kong (David Tso, Majid Hassan, George Suza) beat New Zealand (Stewart McConnell, Jim Christie, Terry Scott) 21-10.
