China’s land worry
NZPA-Reuter Peking Land misuse could turn vast areas of China about the size of Scotland into desert in the next 15 years unless urgent preventative steps are taken, says the “China Daily” newspaper. It said 75,000 square kilometres of land, mostly in arid and semi-arid regions
in north China, faced becoming desert through overcultivation, over-grazing, misuse of water resources and bad planning. The official newspaper said the Government had started a huge programme of reforestation and better land management and offered cheap loans to peasants to plant trees.
