Superannuation

Sir, — Mr de Cleene’s statement about national superannuation (“The Press,” September 9) completely ignores the fact that all national superannuitants have paid into Government coffers substantial weekly amounts in what used to be known as social security tax and later altered to social security income tax, for many, many years, going back in some cases to before World War 11. It is also factual that approximately 80 per cent superannuitants continue paying substantial tax, although they receive national superannuation. Thank God for the private member’s bill due to go before Parliament on September 18 being introduced by Mr Venn Young and the Opposition. Also “The Press,” reported this on September 9. Everybody interested should check with his or her member of Parliament and help to publicise the matter. — Yours, etc., DAVID S. COWIE. September 9, 1985.
