De Groot makes biggest break

Peter de Groot, of Canterbury, made the highest break of 78 on the second day of the Lion Brown New Zealand snooker championships at the Riccarton W.M.C. yesterday. De Groot, who has played only two matches so far, is one of several players with unbeaten records so far in section play. Among them is the defending champion, Glen Kwok, (Auckland), who needed only three frames to win his only match of the day. Also in good form was the Canterbury cueist, Dave Meredith, who has already collected the national billiards title. Meredith played two contests, dropping only one frame in the process. Hawke’s Bay's Frank Paul made an excellent break of 73 in his morning contest, but his unbeaten record was ruined in a straight frames loss to Harry Haenga in the last session of play.
