Jimmy Cotter farewelled
NZPA staff correspondent Wellington Jimmy Cotter, one of New Zealand sports’ most loved sons, was farewelled at Lower Hutt’s St James Anglican Church yesterday afternoon. More than 800 seated and standing guests paid their final respects to the immensely talented and versatile sportsman, tragically lost in a motor accident south of Auckland last week, aged 26. Heading the guest list was the All Black coach, Mr Brian Lochore, who accompanied the Carterton rugby team down from Wairarapa, while lan Upston and most
of the Wellington team, and the Petone coach, Mr Andy Leslie, and club mates filled ranks. Hutt Valley’s Cardinals Softball Club - the springboard for Cotter into the national and international spotlight — was represented in force. The club’s chairman, Mr Murray Forrest, read a telex from the Japan Softball Association, who were to have hosted the Cardinals on a tour, to state the respect shown Cotter. “We are sad to hear of the club’s loss. And sad that world softball has lost its greatest player — Jimmy Cotter,” Mr Forrest read out.
