“ANZIO” Robert Mitchum, Peter Falk, Earl Holliman, Mark Damon RCA/C olombia/H oyts 112 min PG 1968 Due on the shelves shortly, this excellent war story reconstructs the British and American landing at Anzio in January 1944 and the events which followed.
Robert Mitchum plays the role of Dick Ennis, a war correspondent who lands with the troops. Both the
film and the character are based on the book by Wynford Vaughn-Thomas, a correspondent who was there. The delay in advancing from the landing to Rome gave the Germans the chance to re-group and draw on reinforcements. The resulting bloodbath cost more than 6000 Allied lives and took four months to put right. This film covers the battles and the more personal involvement of the characters — all superbly portrayed and thoroughly believable.
