Two more parking officers

Two more enforcement officers will be employed in Christchurch to catch parking offenders in the inner city. The Christchurch City Council’s policy and finance committee recommended that two additional officers be employed to increase the level of enforcement.

A report presented to the committee outlined the problems the enforcement section faced and said that with the existing number of officers it was not possible to patrol adequately all restricted parking. This had resulted in more vehicles being parked at expired meters and more

vehicles parking all day on time-restricted areas during the last 18 months.

The loss of parking meter revenue had been affected, said the report. Cr Maurice Carter said that the parking enforcement section should be selffunding and maintain a high level of enforcement of parking regulations. The Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, said it was important not to get too heavy-handed with offenders.

Conference The City Manager, Mr John Gray, will attend an international city managers’

conference in Hanover, West Germany, in May, 1986.

The conference will discuss the role of city managers in negotiating and is part of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s plan to encourage links between member countries. The committee . recommended that the council pay the full cost of Mr Gray’s trip.

Rates relief All parking provided with the planned Parkroyal Hotel will be exempt from rates. The Town Hall Board of Management sought a full

remission of rates for the 177 public parking spaces that are planned. This was approved by the committee. A review of rating for the parking spaces will be done five years after the plan goes ahead. M.E.D. accounts A letter from the AuditorGeneral praised the council for its decision to continue to have the Municipal Electricity Department’s accounts audited separately from those of other council activities. The letter also said it was wise not to publish the accounts until they had been audited.
