Streets Ahead in line for success tonight

By

G. K. YULE

A nose defeat at the hands of Aran Blaze on August 24 at his latest start points to Streets Ahead as a leading contender for honours in the Oakleys, Ltd, Handicap at Addington Raceway this evening. The six-year-old will be opposed by some smart pacers in what is the main race on the second night of the New Brighton Club’s September meeting, and his handicap of 10m is unlikely to be enough to keep him out of the finish. Streets Ahead has been away from a win since he

was successful on this course in July, 1983, at the end of his three-year-old career. He went amiss and did not race again until last autumn, when a placing or two were his best efforts.

His placing on August 24 was a first-class performance as he tried to lead for the last 1400 m and it was only in the last stride that he was caught. Possibly the hardest for Streets Ahead to beat will be Sure He Can, a member of lan Cameron’s in-form team. He was runner-up to Gold and Black at Addington on November 17 and a week later finished a close

sixth in the race won by his stablemate, Aran Blaze. Counsel Bay, too, will be in demand. He has had an exasperating run of placings and is overdue for a win. He has not raced since he finished second to Saucy Star on August 24. Saucy Star has gone to win a heat of the D.B. Superstar Series and will be one of the . top fancies in the $24,000 final on Friday. Elbon Blue, Nanoose and

Star Lady should be the pick of the others on the front, while Gold and Black, Rosin and Vicki McQuade will be handicapped horses likely to get into the finish. Blue Willow, Reiver and Lively Too form a likely trio in the Stewart Steel Place, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. There will also be support for Goodnight Kiwi, Pop Star, Chance Decision and Lordshipman.
