A new walkway connecting the Governor’s Bay wharf to Sandy Bay Road will be completed in about a week. The walkway, which is just over Ikm long and winds along the shoreline through scenic bush, has taken about a year to build.

The Lyttelton Borough Council has employed about six workers, under the Labour Department’s Project Employment Programme to construct the walkway. The track has been laid in shingle, with wooden handrails and bridges.

The co-ordinating supervisor at the borough’s reserves department, Mr B. R. Gardiner, said there had been “tremendous community input” to the walkway from the Governor’s Bay Residents’ Association. The group had initiated the project, and had helped plant native trees along the route.

-Mr Gardiner said the walkway had been used already, and those who had used it were favourably impressed.

All that remains to be completed on the walkway is a handrail bridge. Piles for the bridge have already been sunk. The project supervisor for most of the walkway’s construction has been Mr Bill Bush, the former All Black and Canterbury rugby representative.
