‘Apartheid contrary to the will of God”
PA Auckland Apartheid is contrary to the will of God and the South African Government is to be condemned for it, says the National Council of Churches.
The council, at its general meeting in Auckland on Monday resolved to send a message to the President of South Africa, Mr Botha, saying: “We believe God is on the side of those seeking justice, those South Africans whom your Government detains, bans and kills.” A copy of the message would also be sent to the British Prime Minister, Mrs Thatcher, and the New Zealand Prime Minister, Mr Lange, urging them to support the call from within South Africa for comprehensive economic sanctions as an effective way to oppose apartheid. Another statement arising from the four-day meeting
supported the aims of the Homosexual Law Reform bill so that homosexual acts between consenting adults in .private should not be a crime.
The statement said Christians held a variety of views on homosexual law reform but the Christian attitude towards homosexuals should be one of acceptance as persons. The meeting also received a proposal that the N.C.C. would be formed into a new ecumenical body that would include Catholics and probably be called the Conference of Churches in Aotearoa.
The proposal would be sent to member churches for their study and response. At present, the N.C.C. consists' of almost all the main Christian churches in New Zealand except Catholics, -Pentecostal churches, and some small denominations.
