U.S. Tennis Open
NZPA-AFP New York Czechoslovakia’s Ivan Lendl reached the third round of the United States Open when he beat 1983 semi-finalist Bill Scanlon of the United States 6-2, 6-0, 63 in the second round here on Saturday. Lendl now faces the winner of the match between Argentina’s Horacio de la Pena and Claudio Panatta of Italy. The defending champion,
John McEnroe, reached the fourth found with a straight sets win over fellow American, Bud Schultz. He now plays Czechoslovakia’s Tomas Smid. Yannick Noah (France) and Vitas Gerulaitis (United States) won their secondround matches while Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert Lloyd (both United States) are into the fourth round of the women’s singles.
