The front of a Spanish shirt showing an elaborate form of pattern darning. The intricate stitch, worked in black thread on white, adds richness to the plain fabric. Patterns are built up, some almost solid, some open, resembling black lace. The illustration comes from a new guide to decorative embroidery called “Needlework School”. The book has been produced by the Embroiderers’ Guild Practical Study Group in Britain, people who are both teachers and artists in needlework. It is profusely illustrated, with the emphasis on teaching new skills. (Windward/ Novalit Books, 1985, 192 pp., $36.95).
