Pitcairn’s new jetty
The sea-battered harbour jetty on the remote South Pacific island of Pitcairn will be reconstructed with equipment shipped from Britain.
Britain’s Overseas Development Administration is funding the £240,000 ($NZ660,000) project which involves shipping in cement, steel, and construction gear to the small island of fewer than 70 inhabitants.
Aggregates and sand-are being found locally to keep the project within budget. The islanders, for whom the jetty is the only means of getting on and off Pitcairn, have a 15-metre aluminium longboat which is being converted to a dredger using jet Jump equipment. — British News Review.
