Rightist leader to visit territory
NZPA-Reuter Paris Jacques Chirac, leader of the French opposition Gaullist R.P.R. said yesterday that he would visit New Caledonia next month during the run-up to regional elections. The September 29 elections for four regional councils represent the first stage in a French Government plan to hold a referendum on independence in association with France by the end of 1987. Mr Chirac is the first French opposition leader to announce a trip to New Caledonia during the two week electoral campaign. In order to avoid violence during the elections between pro-independence Melanesians and white settlers who wanted the territory to remain French, more that 1000 extra police and gendarmes would be sent in to control law and order, New Caledonia’s prefect, Hubert Blanc, said yesterday. They would be reinforcements to the 1700 gendarmes permanently based in the territory.
The High Commission said that there were over 83,000 voters in New Caledonia last February and they expected the figure to rise 3000 to 4000.
Separatist Kanaks are widely expected to win a majority in at least two of the regional bodies and a possible majority in a third.
