Mr Pat Kelly pulls out of race
Mr Pat Kelly, one of the Labour Party’s most devout supporters and one of the Government’s most vocifer|ous critics, yesterday withdrew his candidacy for the junior vice-presidency. Mr Kelly hinted earlier this week that either he or Mr Garth Lomax might withdraw to avoid splitting the anti-goods and services tax vote if the contest looked close. The election is now a twoway contest between Mr
Lomax and Mr Rick Barker, the general secretary of the Auckland Hotel Workers’ Union.
Mr Barker supports GST while both Mr Lomax, Labourers’ Union, and Mr Kelly, Cleaners’ Union, are campaigning against it at the party conference.
Mr Kelly is still in the race for the executive and for the position of industrial representative on the. New Zealand council.
