Professor Grant Akopov (right), head of the Soviet Committee of War Veterans, and Mr Vladimir Lebedev, at the Bridge of Remembrance in Christchurch yesterday. The veterans are visiting Australia and New Zealand
to mark the fortieth anniversary of the end of World War 11. During the war, Professor Akopov was in the siege of Leningrad. Mr Lebedev joined the Soviet Navy in 1942, at the age of 16, and reached the rank of captain.
Professor Akapov and Mr Lebedev met the Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, and last evening attended a public meeting at the W.E.A. hall, organised by the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand-U.S.S.R. Society.
