N.Z. women’s hockey win

PA Wellington After more than a year without a win in international hockey, the New Zealand women’s team yesterday roared back into form with a convincing 2-1 victory against the touring England team at Mount Albert Park in Wellington. It delighted not only the New Zealand players’ but also the coach, Mr Wayne Boyd, who had campaigned unsuccessfully in Australia and then in Los Angeles at k

the Olympics.

On the form it showed yesterday, New Zealand should be able to wrap up the two-test series in the last game in Wellington tomorrow morning.

After the match, Mr Boyd said the team had played well enough to deserve the win. In the first half, when New Zealand scored both goals, the pace was played incredibly fast.

The New Zealand inside right, Cathy Thompson,

made the first serious foray into England territory and it was she who set up the first goal in the fourteenth minute to captain Jenny McDonald.

The visiting coach Jenny Cardwell conceded after the match that lack of marking caused England problems in defence, but she promised a more sparkling effort tomorrow morning.

Scorers: New Zealand 2 (J. McDonald, C. Thompson). England 1 (D. Brown).
